FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
15 October 2003
Oklahoma City,
OK––Breathing Disorders Services, Inc. (BDS), a national rehabilitation
specialist for sleep disordered breathing, has announced the opening of a
new service center, BDS/Texas, at 3500 Oakmont
in Austin, TX. Headquartered in Oklahoma City, the company
already has successful operations in Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, California,
North Carolina and Arizona.
Through the new
center, BDS will provide in-home nasal continuous positive airway pressure
(CPAP) equipment and support to persons diagnosed with obstructive sleep
apnea (OSA) syndrome. OSA is a disorder in which a person repeatedly stops
breathing during sleep. It can occur when muscles that control the tongue
and soft palate relax, allowing the upper airway to narrow or even become
blocked. CPAP equipment delivers mildly pressurized air through a small nose
mask, keeping the airway open.
Recent medical
studies have established a direct correlation between sleep disordered
breathing and cardiovascular problems such as hypertension, stroke, coronary
artery disease, myocardial infarction, pulmonary hypertension and congestive
heart failure.
Most newly diagnosed
OSA sufferers need hands-on technical assistance and emotional support in
order to make a lifelong adjustment to sleeping with CPAP equipment.
Applying a philosophy of, “Relationship First,” BDS provides a
multi-faceted, on-going, and personal program of assistance in order to gain
compliance from each patient.
“The Austin office is just the latest step in
our plan to render services in areas of the country where there is a known
demand,” said an official company spokesperson from BDS. “The need for our services is very wide-spread. Nearly 20
million Americans are estimated to suffer from sleep disordered breathing,
though many of them are still undiagnosed.”
